I loved reading this book. If you appreciate complex and creative use of language, you will love it also. Parker has a rare gift for bringing characters to life. Full of life and reality, his characters lack the cliche I find in much modern literature. While they are familiar, especially if you are from with Queens, they are each unique individuals. Some you will love to meet, some will give you the creeps. All are certainly intersting. The plot is surprisingly complex and full of twists. I became quickly engrossed in this modern take on the age-old "mobster" story. Mickey Walker is a classic romantic protagonist, but armed also with a dark side that he would never apologize for. He is a modern hero with a set of uncompromising principles.
If you are looking for a good read this summer, this is a great one for the beach! You will laugh and be entertained.

The Last Round Vincent R Parker 9780557769872 Books Reviews
The Last Round is a quick read that hooks you fast. Its noir style brings to mind the winding situation of a flawed protagonist like in Hammett or Chandler readings but now we are in a contemporary Queens, NY setting. Something is always revealed behind closed doors in seedy bars, underground casinos, neighborhood businesses and seemingly mundane American dream homes. The unraveling of information throughout this novella is intriguing and shocking. Each chapter works like another jab on the reader who is caught up in a tireless literary boxing match. The protagonist, Mickey, is tangled up with crime, love, finances, family hierarchies and self doubt. He is just trying to keep one step ahead of enemies and tries to stay hard. However, the reader will recognize hidden sentimentality and heart in this strong willed, witty man. The symbolism throughout is strong and the tone of the speaker is harsh and unapologetic. We do root for Mickey even when questioning his tactics.
here is a pleasant surprise from first time author vincent parker. if crime drama is your passion be sure to check out this little tale of sinister urban vice. the novela paints a stark picture of localized gangland warfare in the borough of queens set against the backdrop of 21st century metropolitan new york city and america. parker has designed the plot beautifully around his central character, former boxer mickey walker, who is no hero himself but must come to grips with the difficult underworld he embraces.
what i like best is how true parker stays to his main theme of it's me vs. my opponent in the ring of life. is it life itself that confronts the protagonist or is it the obstacles he must face to make it to the last round?
this is an excellent essay on that subject and its characters are well defined. the plot moves quickly and poignantly from one conflict to the next with well calculated twists that make the narrative terribly believable and shocking.
The Last Round is not for everybody. this is a dark tale that is often hard to visualize and imagine from the outside of parker's bleak world. the story reads like a classic 20th century mickey spillane or raymond chandler novel that evolves into a more modern movie script depiction of organized crime. only these characters seem so much more real to us than the romanticized versions of today's cinema. i only wish some film studio would have the guts to produce this work as parker imagines it only because he doesn't have to use that much innovation to convey what is reality among the all too true to life individuals and settings in this book.
i highly recommend this book to all those who love this genre and for all those who love a good honest, realistic tale of urban life than many of us haven't the faintest idea about. i hope there will be a sequel to this fine work. please mr. parker give us more!
This book is somewhat strange for a first novel. The author is clearly a fan of film noir (French for "black film") movies that emphasize cynical attitudes and sexual motivations with a hard core detective. You expect that if a movie was made of this book it would have to be filmed with a low-key black-and-white visual style like that used in some of the early Bogart films. The writing is terse, sharp, telling the story without a lot of extra words. It is a story that most writers would fit into a lot more than the 114 pages this novel takes.
It is clear that like many first novels, Mr. Parker has spent a lot of time writing, re-writing and polishing his story to produce exactly what he wants. He has set the story in Queens, NYC, which is where he lives so he brings to the story a knowledge of the area. It's not perhaps the real area in which he lives, but it is the area familiar to fans of the dark underside of New York.
This is an excellent first novel, hopefully it will sell enough that we can see more from this writer.
Mr.Parker strikes it with an amazing story which draws in the reader. The plot if exciting but not a drag. Well Done.
This is a well written intriguing tale that portrays the dark and disturbing underbelly of this diverse area of Queens N.Y. The seedy characters fight daily for survival where betrayal and deception are a common way of life. This is such a fast-paced tale that I found it hard to put down and when I finished the book I wanted to know what comes next. If you are taking a trip I would definitely recommend taking this book along with you.
The Last Round is a gritty look at the underbelly of one of the most diverse areas in the country, Queens, New York. Mr. Parker has written a story full of memorable characters and captures the atmosphere of this "outer borough". While short on pages, it is long on story and colorful charaters. Mr. Parker has done what more writers should do, write about something that is familiar. In doing so he sucks us into the environment his charaters inhabit. I look forward to reading more from Mr.Parker in the future.
